The Averroes Laboratories (ARL) uses various methods to trace veterinary pathogenic bacteria. This study covers a wide field of knowledge that comprises veterinary bacteriology, water microbiology and food bacteriology. A wide range of tests is available, part of which was developed by (ARL). Every year the bacteriological laboratory carries out 350,000 bacteriological tests (this refers to the classical culture methods).
The Averroes Laboratories (ARL) clinical-chemical and haematological laboratory tests various types of samples mainly for chemical characteristics. The (ARL) laboratory has been ISO 17025 accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Board (RvA) for most of the laboratory tests (registration number L120 Testing). The clinical-chemical laboratory mainly uses standardised, internationally recognised methods. (ARL) has reference values of various parameters for every animal species.
The most popular serological test method is ELISA (Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay), which is used to demonstrate antibodies against micro-organisms (e.g. bacteria, viruses and parasites). ELISAs are based on the principle that the antibodies in question, or parts thereof, attach to a carrier (indirect ELISAs) or compete with a specific labelled antibody (blocking ELISAs), with attached antibodies then being made visible by staining.
PCR testing is used increasingly within the Averroes Laboratories (ARL) Animal Health laboratory. The principle is based on amplification of a specific fragment of DNA or RNA originating from a bacteria, a virus or a parasite. The parasitological laboratory is a highly specialised division of the GD Animal Health laboratory. Here, parasites are detected using direct or indirect methods. The laboratory has extensive experience in the field of effectiveness of antiparasitics and the detection of resistance development.

The Pathology department carries out diagnostic tests to determine the cause of illness or death in farm animals, domestic animals and horses. Testing farm animals usually involves post mortem pathology, with infectious diseases in particular playing a role. Domestic animal tests on the other hand mostly relate to cell and tissue tests using thin needle aspiration biopsies and surgical biopsies, including tumors and skin abnormalities.

(ARL) tests various aspects of water, such as the microbial count (colony forming units), content levels of various minerals and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD).
